WHAT IS A PESTICIDE?
The word pesticide is a term derived from the combination of the Latin words “pestis” – infectious disease – and “sido” – I kill, destroy.
Pesticides are an effective tool used in the fight against plant pests and diseases, as well as weeds.
Pesticides are used on grain and grain products, cotton products, wool, leather, as well as in the fight against dangerous disease spreaders in humans and animals.
These medicines are used to protect crops grown in agriculture from pests and increase plant resistance.
TYPES AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF PESTICIDES
Pesticides are divided into two groups according to their chemical composition: organic compounds and inorganic compounds.
In the last 60-70 years, the use of organic pesticides has started to be used in higher quantities.
Pesticides are divided into the following main groups according to the purpose of use:
- Insecticides – intended for the control of insects
- Acaricides – preparations to destroy ticks
- Nematocides – to kill the nematode disease causative worms
- Fungicides – used in the fight against various plant diseases
- Bactericides – used to fight bacteria
- Viricides – to destroy viruses
- Herbicides – useful for killing weeds
- Zoocides are used against rodents
- Antifidings – used against the forces
- Molluscocides – used against harmful snails
The most widely used herbal medicines in Azerbaijan are pesticides
Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are mostly used in the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan. The demand for these items is increasing every year.
How do pesticides kill harmful organisms?
According to the mechanism of action, pesticides are divided into different groups:
- poisons that destroy insects by touching any organ;
- those that affect insects through their digestive system;
- systemic influencers;
- those that affect the respiratory tract of insects;
Herbicides used in weed control are also divided into several different groups: mass-acting and selective-acting.
Rules for using pesticides – plant medicines
When working with pesticides, special protective equipment (special clothes and shoes, respirator, gas mask, protective glasses) should be used. Pesticides can have negative effects if not used correctly.
